You just received your iPad 2 and need to get it set up. Cool. Before you even open the box there are "must do's" that are required to start. The iPad 2 comes without any software so you have to get online to install its latest version. This process is going to take a couple of hours so get yourself organized before you start.
1. Start up your PC (laptop or desktop, Windows or Mac).
Any PC will do, provided you have an Internet connection and an available USB port.
2. Install the utility program iTunes. (www.iTunes.com/download)
I call iTunes a utility as it has grown into much more than just a music organizer. Run(ning) the install takes a bit of time but wait until you see that the install is successful before you proceed with the iPad 2. If you are current with an already installed version of iTunes, you are good to go.
You are required to create an Apple ID during the iTunes install process. Select something easy as you will be using the ID again and again. Same with any passwords. iTunes will require you to Restart the PC to finish its install. So, restart the PC.
An easy Apple ID. You will soon discover that the touch pad keyboard on the iPad 2 has two screens, one for alphabetic and the other for numbers and punctuation. If you have a complex ID or password you are going to be jumping from one keyboard to the other with every prompt for account ID and PW.
3. Have a pencil and note pad available.
You will want to take notes about all the install options you have to select.
4. With iTunes running.
Connect the iPad 2 to the PC with the USB cable from its box. The iPad will show its first signs of life. Register the iPad2, Accept the users agreement, Save and Continue.
The setup has lots of options. When you can, take the defaults. You will get prompted for Registration, Passwords, Security Questions, Credit card, Survey, etc ... Eventually you will see the serial number of your iPad 2. Make a note of the serial number.
The remainder of the setup are about pre installed app's like wifi, email, web connections.
The iPad 2 setup is a lot of fun. Really it is.
